The Presidency says there is an increase in the vetting of senior government officials who are being employed in the public sector. The Presidency briefed Parliament’s Standing Committee on Public Accounts on the Special Investigating Unit’s report. Chief Operating Officer in the Presidency, Rory Gallocher, has conceded that the vetting system is currently not working optimally. Gallocher says there are also challenges in the application of necessary consequence management. He says, “By the way, chairperson vetting does happen. We do not deny that there is a backlog in vetting. Again it’s a resourcing. It’s a vacancy. It’s a backlog that we need to catch up, but senior officials are vetted. Is every senior official in the job vetted in time before they are given access? Admittedly not. And we are aware of that and we are busy addressing that.”
